How to avoid stress during a job interview
1. Why is a job interview always stressful?
Job interview is one of the most ticklish private talks. When a job seeker stays face to face with an employer, he experiences two main difficulties.
The first difficulty is adaptation in the “stranger in a strange land” environment. Having come to an interview, a job seeker finds himself in a new team with already established rules of behavior and communication. He has to exert efforts, try to match their standards, get on the inside.
The second one is a state similar to regression. An employer possesses absolute freedom to make decisions, whether to hire a candidate or not, and this is an obvious advantage. On the contrary, a job seeker has no right of choice. He is like a small child that is standing in front of his father and feels guilty for everything (particularly for his previous professional failures).
2. How to avoid mistakes during a job interview?
Usually it is job seekers who have such problems mentioned above. Even if a job seeker is well qualified, an employer can prefer another one. You should remember that the main task of any candidate is to somewhat tempt an employer. First you should put yourself in the employer’s place and ask yourself: what would I like in a candidate? The answer can be easily stated in one sentence: “I want a candidate that I will like to work with.”
If an employer has to choose between two candidates, while one of them does not know everything but learns quickly and is very sociable, and the other one knows everything and can do everything, but refuses to adapt to a new team and corporate culture, the employer will no doubt hire the first candidate.
Besides an employer should be more loyal to job seekers and try to see good qualities behind uneasiness and anxiety. It is easy to lose a good specialist only because he was embarrassed by something in process of the interview and became confused.
3. How to behave during a job interview?
Tips for employers:
- An employer is inherently in the catbird seat in comparison with a candidate, but he needs to entrench his status, otherwise he can find himself in a ridiculous situation. However he should not abuse his power, since there is a risk of seeming aggressive, and as a result it can scare job seekers.
- An employer should realize that he has more ascendancy that he had ever thought. Even if he is in a positive mood, every his word seems to be an order to a job seeker, and each his decision seems to be a verdict! An employer should take it into consideration and be more delicate.
Tips for job seekers:
- The main purpose for a job seeker is to show that he is not a rival for an employer and that he agrees to obey a new hierarchy. He should understand that it is an employer who is the master of a situation, and it is an employer who will decide when and how to begin and finish a job interview.
- The speech of a job seeker should be short, concrete and not ambiguous. If he will hesitate and be shy, this will affect the employer’s decision not in the best.
